Tootsie, an adorable Northern Saw-whet Owl and Raptor-in-Residence at the Alaska Raptor Center, weighing in at just 3.1 ounces (89 grams)! Despite their small size and nocturnal nature, Northern Saw-whet Owls have a distinctive, piercing call that they repeat multiple times in a row. During the day, they hide in dense vegetation, usually near the trunk of evergreen trees and just above eye level. This Northern Saw-whet Owl definitely takes the MVP of our most Superb Owl moment of 2025. Last fall at our Owl Banding station in Northern Colorado this Northern Saw-whet Owl gifted not just us, but the world this beautiful owl pellet before taking off.
