The colorful powders used in Holi, the Hundu spring festival of color, are being prepared by villagers in northeastern India. The colored powder is known as “gulal” and will be thrown throughout Hindu communities during the last full moon of the lunar month, on March 21. The tradition stems from the legend of Lord Krishna. When Lord Krishna complained to his mother that his consort Radha’s skin was much lighter than his, his mother smeared colors onto Radha’s face, which is why Holi is celebrate
