Here's how it works: The technique was perfected by Eugen Schufftan, a German cinematographer, during the making of Metropolis (1927). Although, it's worth noting that similar methods were used by other filmmakers earlier. Fritz Lang, the director, wanted to insert actors into shots of miniature skyscrapers and buildings. Schufftan achieved this using a specially made mirror to create the illusion.
