Japan's Sakurajima volcano shoots 8,000-foot ash plume into sky

SAKURAJIMA VOLCANO IN JAPAN ERUPTS, ASHFALL CANCELS FLIGHTS! A volcano on Japan's major western island of Kyushu erupted multiple times on Sunday, Nov. 16, sending a plume of smoke and ash as high as 4.4 kilometers into the sky and causing dozens of flight cancellations. Sakurajima, located on the southern tip of Kyushu near the city of Kagoshima, first erupted at around 1 AM, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
