With Bates' new boathouse nearly ready to open, the college's original facility — a minimalist, barnlike structure from 1988 — was knocked down yesterday morning. Bates rowing coach Peter Steenstra was on hand for the demolition. "I'm proud of what we did with so little," Steenstra said. "And now it's amazing how so little can somehow seem like so much."
