Four detainees have escaped from a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey, which has been the center of protests since its opening in May and where both a sitting congresswoman and Newark’s mayor have been arrested.

Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted Tuesday on federal charges alleging she impeded and interfered with immigration officers outside a New Jersey detention center while Newark’s mayor was being arrested after he tried to join a congressional oversight visit at the facility.

Three LA-area members of Congress were locked out of the ICE Processing Center near Victorville, blocking attempts to oversee those arrested during ICE raids.
The indictment charges McIver with "forcibly impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers," New Jersey U.S. Attorney Alina Habba said.
Anti-ICE protesters were gathered outside the facility during the escape, preventing an SUV from exiting the gates and pursuing the migrants.
Democratic U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was charged in a criminal complaint with two assault counts stemming from a May 9 visit to the center. She was indicted on Tuesday; the indictment includes three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding and interfering with federal officials.
