A ban on links to X content began on Reddit sports forums and has spread to numerous other sub-Reddits with more discussing the move.

Subreddits devoted to sports, videogaming and even geographic areas have opted to block links to Musk's X social network.

After a movement spread across a number of sports communities on Reddit Tuesday, two of the social media site’s largest sports-focused communities have banned users from creating posts that link to X (formerly Twitter).

Reddit communities from r/NBA to r/Christianity say they won’t allow links to the platform after Elon Musk’s gesture, which some interpreted as a Nazi-style salute.

Instagram blocked searches related to a number of political hashtags, including #democrats, #democrat, #jan6th, #republicans and a number of other terms Tuesday. Users who searched for these hashtags were instead greeted with a notice that “we’ve hidden these results" because they "may contain sensitive content.

In an email to Cybernews, Reddit stressed that the trend was user-driven and that the platform “has no ban on X links.” It hosts over 100,000 active communities covering a wide range of topics and they are free to enforce their own rules, according to the company.
