North Carolina State Board of Elections approves nearly 100 student and employee IDs for upcoming elections
North Carolina trial judges have struck down an attempt by Republican state lawmakers to shift power away from the governor to the state auditor.
The board said the newly approved IDs include student IDs and employee IDs for educational institutions, some county and local governments, and charter schools.
The State Board of Elections has approved nearly 100 student and employee identification cards that can be used in the upcoming 2025 municipal elections and the 2026 primary and general elections in North Carolina. The newly approved student IDs include those from all UNC system schools, plus several other colleges and universities.
Kyle Ingram has the details on the 2-1 ruling from Wake County Superior Court that came down Wednesday, blocking a GOP-led bill that would have transferred control over the election boards to the state auditor. The court said in its opinion that the bill violated the state constitution.
The ruling is a win for Democrats who, for now, will be able to retain a 3-2 majority on the State Board of Elections, as well as all 100 county boards of elections.
