Hold onto your hats because winds whipping across the Northeast and New England on Thursday have the potential to cause power outages and delay travel just as people get back into their normal routines after the holidays.

Thousands of homes and businesses were without power in Massachusetts on Thursday as roaring wind gusts whipped the region.

Good morning everyone and Happy New Year! We ended 2024 on a wet note with bands of moderate to heavy rain tracking through. A few leftover showers for today with mild temperatures. The bigger story headlines in the weather department will be the gusty winds ahead which will lead to much colder air.

Prolonged gusty winds on the order of 40-55+ MPH may lead to isolated power outages and/or wind damage through the rest of today. The latest reports from this morning show that much of the region is already gusting to the advisory criteria.

Meteorologist Scott Gagliardi said a wind advisory was put in place for the state until Thursday night. Here's his 7:20 a.m. forecast.
