The New York Islanders won Monday’s Draft Lottery and will select first overall at the 2025 NHL Draft. The Islanders currently are without a general manager after announcing the departure of Lou Lamoriello last month. Now, they have another big decision to make.

The Hochul letter also tries to guilt the NHL by pointing out New York State spent $100 million on a new Long Island Rail Road station to serve the arena, "the first new LIRR station in nearly 50 years," which says a lot about New York's ability to build new things. Also, there was already a station half a mile away.

The New York Islanders made a major jump, won the NHL Draft Lottery on Monday night and secured the right to the first pick at the draft on June 27. The San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks, Utah Hockey Club and Nashville Predators will round out the top five of the draft.

The New York Islanders bucked long odds and won the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery. The franchise last had the No. 1 pick in 2009.
