A man died after police said he was shot by a Richmond detective on Interstate 80 in Contra Costa County, closing the westbound lanes for most of Thursday.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the deadly police shooting that occurred on Interstate 80 on Thursday, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol on Thursday shut down all westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Hercules after a police officer shot and killed someone, according to two sources.

The freeway closure came after a Richmond police officer shot someone on I-80 near Highway 4, authorities said.

A wrong-way crash on I-80 in Solano County resulted in three deaths, with a subsequent minor injury collision following.

The collision was followed by a second crash resulting in minor injuries.

The lanes were shut down just after 7 a.m. near Hercules, officials said.
