Big Island Election: Alameda Defeats Roth In Mayor’s Race Upset
Early election returns showed Hilo psychologist Kimo Alameda on track to defeat Big Island Mayor Mitch Roth in a surprise upset in a contest that featured some sharp exchanges over Roth’s record and accomplishments. The first returns released late Tuesday had Alameda with 35,577 votes to 30,717 votes for Roth.

Promising change and transparency, Dr. Kimo Alameda’s message resonated with voters who gave him 51.2% of the vote to upset incumbent Mitch Roth for Hawaiʻi Island mayor. Alameda received 35,577 votes to Rothʻs 30,717 ( 44.2%), according to the Hawaiʻi election printout at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, which did not change after the second printout.
