Though such alignments aren't unheard of, this particular formation was special due to the sheer number of planets visible together.
Six planets are now visible in the night skies. Here’s how to see the ‘planet parade.’

A parade of planets will be visible in Austin all month
Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars will appear to line up and be bright enough to see without a telescope or binoculars — and with them, you can see Uranus and Neptune, too.
Look Up For January's 'Parade Of Planets'

How to see the ‘planetary parade’ in Iowa skies
A unique sight is visible across Iowa skies, and viewers only have a few weeks to see it. The “planetary parade” will allow up to six planets to be seen with the help of binoculars or a telescope or four planets to be seen with the naked eye.
