The U.S. stock market remained volatile Thursday despite the 90-day reprieve on many of President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs, despite a brief midday run up.

The announcement of Donald Trump's so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on 2 April - what he called "liberation day" - sent a shockwave through the global trading system and financial markets. And the President's 90-day pause on some of these tariffs on 9 April set off a relief rally in stock markets.

Trump defended the tariffs he imposed on other nations but acknowledged some problems with the rollout in a meeting with his Cabinet, "but in the end it's going to be a beautiful thing." Meanwhile, the White House raised the tariffs on all Chinese exports to 125% after Beijing's latest round of retaliation -- that's in addition to the 20% fentanyl-related tariffs imposed in early February,
